How X counts characters
X's 280-character limit is not a count of the letters you can see.

Links cost 23
Every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is, because X rewrites it. A 90-character web address and a 20-character one cost the same.
Emoji count double
Most emoji count as two characters toward the 280.
Where to check
The composer's X preview counts this way and shows how many characters you have left. The free character counter and thread formatter use the same counting, in your browser, with no account.
If it is too long
Dripost does not publish threads to X yet, so a post over 280 is refused with how far over it is. Shorten it, or split it with the thread formatter and post the parts from X.
