Why the numbers differ from a plain word count
X counts links as 23
Every link costs 23 characters on X, however long it is, because X rewrites it. A 90-character URL and a 20-character one cost the same.
Emoji count double on X
Most emoji count as two characters toward the 280.
The fold matters more than the limit
LinkedIn shows roughly the first 210 characters or three lines, and Instagram about 125, before 'see more'. Most people read only that part.
